About Our School
Ashern Early Years School is a Kindergarten to Grade 4 school located in Ashern, Manitoba. It has a current enrollment of approximately 90 students. The school team includes 6 teachers, a half-time principal/half-time resource teacher, several educational assistants, a part-time librarian, a part-time secretary and a part-time custodian. We currently have 5 classrooms (K, 1-2, 1-2, 3-4, 3-4). A program for 4 year olds is offered in our building from October to May (2 days per week) and another program for 3 year olds is offered once a week for 10 weeks. We have an active Parent Council that meets 4 to 5 times each year.
Some of the programs/activities that make our school special:
We start each year with Strong Beginnings: a special time where we get to know all our students' strengths and challenges as learners
Our ongoing Butterfly Garden Project: students helped plan and plant a special garden area designed to attract butterflies
Say READ: where students read to seniors from one of the personal care homes in town on a weekly basis
A fun filled Lunch Hour Games Program: run by one of our educational assistants
Guided Reading: teachers work with small groups of children with books written at their reading level
Math: we have purchased a lot of hands-on learning materials to engage our students and deepen their understanding (Learning Carpet, digi-blocks, Power of Ten cards, etc.)
Technology: we have 10 netbooks that travel around class to class plus several desktops. We have a TV unit in the main entrance for displaying photos of our students "in action"

Parent Advisory Council
It is important to establish relationships with parents of the children and youth in our schools. Parents in our communities are invited to establish parent and school/community partnerships to support schools in the shared responsibility of the education of our youth.
We hope that by being involved with the schools, and providing a voice, that parents will feel more information and better able to support decisions made.
